According to the live map which tracks coronavirus spread (2019-nCoV), almost 10,000 people are currently infected with the virus. More than 200 deaths have also occurred after people contract the virus which causes symptoms such as fever, cough, and shortness of breath and conditions that range from people who are slightly ill to people who are seriously ill and dying.

Since the initial cases had ties to a large seafood and animal market in Wuhan, it is suspected that the virus originated from animals, but this knowledge was not officially confirmed. According to Wikipedia, “Comparisons of genetic sequences between this virus and other virus samples showed similarities to SARS-CoV (79.5 percent) and bat coronaviruses (96 percent),” because of this, it is highly likely that bats were the origin of the current virus devastating China.

Although the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that there is no evidence to suggest that household animals could be contaminated with the new strain of coronavirus, Chinese people have gone a step further to protect their pets from a potential threat. Since the initial coronavirus outbreak, sales of pet masks have recently skyrocketed and do not seem to stop anytime soon.

Zhou Tianxiao, a 33-year-old Beijing-based online retailer, reported selling ten times the amount of dog masks he normally did before the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak. The man initially sold masks specially designed for dogs to help protect the pooches from air pollution, a company he started back in 2018 on the Taobao e-commerce platform.

“[ Dog masks ] may not be as qualified as human-made medical masks but they are practical,” Zhou told MailOnline. The store markets the dog masks for a pack of three, at a price of 49 yuan ($7).

Zhou Tianxiao also said the masks ‘ main purpose was to “remove smog, deter dogs from consuming or leaching food on the floor and prevent them from being exposed to the virus.”
