Michelle Olson and her husband had taken 8-year-old Sophie to Suburbia North Animal Hospital in Houston, Texas, for her routine checkup and rabies vaccine.
All seemed fine, until they got a scary call on their drive home.
“It was the doctor herself calling saying, ‘Please get Sophie back here immediately, we gave her euthanasia instead of a rabies vaccine,’” Olson told CNN affiliate KTRK.
The couple hastened back to the hospital to attempt to save their beloved cat.
“I took her out of her cat carrier immediately and hugged her, spoke to her, so I knew she would remember the last thing,” Olson said. “At this point, I knew she was not going to come back. I only knew. She was dying pretty much in my arms. “Staff at the hospital gave Sophie oxygen and fluids to try to flush out the deadly drugs, Olson told CNN affiliate KPRC-TV. Two days later she perished.
Suburbia North Vet clinic has not returned a request from CNN for comment.
Olson said that while staff at the hospital were extremely sorry and apologistic, it was simply “an accident that should never have happened.”
“My main concern is not to bash them at all, just want to make public aware to be vigilant, ask questions that you didn’t think you had to ask of your veterinarian so this doesn’t happen to anyone else,” Olson said.
